U.S. Air Force The Hangar
Launched summer of 2018, The Hangar mobile tour consists of two 42’ trailers that open up to create a makeshift Air Force hangar. This experiential mobile tour showcases maintainer careers from fixing the hydraulics of a V-22 Osprey using Leap Motion hand tracking, digitally replacing a C-130 tire with pressure-sensing technology, and having users recreate flight signs to marshall an F-35 jet off the runway with Kinect sensors. I was responsible for the overall maintenance and success for the mobile tour it’s first year live.
After a year on the road, I took over to oversee optimizations and updates to streamline the user flow and improve on bottlenecks, replace experiences, and enhance the physical fabrication of the setup to ensure the tech was secure and safe. Realizing that the Microsoft HoloLens wasn’t equipped for this type of user environment, we decided to replace the experience entirely and recreate a new VR in-flight refueling mission. Users are tasked to refuel a F-35, B-2, and C-17 while dealing with wind and turbulence as the difficulty level increases.
With the updates made, The Hangar now is one of the main flagship mobile tour experiences that travels across the country engaging with users and teaching them in interactive ways of all the possibilities there are for maintainers in the U.S. Air Force.
